whimsy

A few weeks ago during a trip to New York, a friend of a friend introduced me to Birchbox.  He told me customers receive samples in the mail once a month in a small beauty box.  My immediate thought was: what kind of samples?  From who?  How many? Are they high quality beauty brands? I decided that I wouldn’t have the answers to any of these questions unless I tried it myself.  And, I received my first Birchbox today!  I adored the pink packaging and the fact that it was themed. For June, the Birchbox fittingly includes items that are perfect for traveling.  Of course, the fact that they are indeed sample size to begin with makes them more flight friendly as well.

Opening this particular Birchbox left me wishing for another vacation!  Additionally, the editorial welcome note is indeed a nice touch.  Instead of just throwing products in a box and shipping them to you- the Birchbox team truly personalizes the experience.  They describe the enclosed Kiehl’s lotion as “the latest skincare winner” and as an oil-free product.  Furthermore, they share that the blush can also be used as a facial highlighter and that the essential oil towelettes are multi-use.  And, that’s not all – you can purchase additional jet set themed products by visiting the Birchbox website where they’ve rounded them up for you!

The orange towelettes are wonderfully refreshing and I was thrilled to find a sample of Kate Spade‘s new fragrance Twirl.  I’ve been dying to try it!  I think it is going to be such fun to receive a box full of new beauty products each month – delivered directly to my door!  Life as a beauty editor.  And, though you do pay $10 a month for membership, consider the money you will save in the long run.  If you find a product you like, you will have a lifelong new favorite at a very small initial cost.  And, if you don’t like a product- you never have to use it again and aren’t tossing away a full bottle!  Think of how much easier it will be to learn the differences between products if you are trying multiple ones with the same promised function.  You can better find what works for you and your individual skin tone by learning what does not. For instance, I am looking forward to trying the enclosed bronzer because finding the perfect self-tanner is an ongoing process for me.  I have never been 100% happy with one and have several bottles that are 3/4 full in my cabinet right now.  And, who knows, maybe Birchbox just sent me perfection – that’s what I’m hoping!

* p.s.:  Right now- spend $50 on full-size product on Birchbox.com and you’ll get a limited-edition Birchbox travel pouch. Just use the code ‘birchboxtravels’ at checkout and it’s yours! http://tinyurl.com/3z4d7e3
