Furbish Studio
Recently, I’ve been following the designs and new arrivals from Furbish Studio in Raleigh, NC – owned by Jamie Meares and opened in 2009. Conveniently, my brother lives in Raleigh and his darling girlfriend, Jenny, was kind enough to take pictures for me on a recent visit to the studio. And, Jamie was lovely enough to interview with Nonsense & Sensibility! I loved hearing about her favorite spring decor picks!
NS: How did Furbish Studio come to be?
JM: Furbish came to be when I got a pink slip from my job in marketing. I kind of stumbled around for a couple of months, thinking about what I wanted to do, and then realized that I could extend my favorite hobbies of reading Domino magazine and lifestyle blogging into an actual business, Furbish Studio.
The Harry Allen Golden Pig Bank is one of Jamie’s favorite purchases from her studio!
NS: Have you always been interested in design and interiors? What has your relationship been like with interior design?
JM: I come from a southern family who was always interested in hunting down unique pieces and good deals. I was naturally drawn to interior design, but until the opening of Furbish, I had only viewed it as a passion and a hobby. Now, I’m lucky enough to call it a career!
NS: Who paints all of the lovely original art pieces at Furbish?
JM: It’s actually Keila’s art, who works with me. Her art has been doing really well! In terms of our design clients, we had been noticing a hole in affordable art for the style that we needed, so we took matters into our own hands. You never know how new products will be created or discovered!
NS: What are some of the goals – whether it comes to aesthetics and price point that you strive for with Furbish?
JM: We really hold domino as the bar to which we set our standards. We do believe in investing in some more expensive and lasting items, but we also like to provide clients with pieces that can really change a room or make a corner pop, without busting the bank.
NS: How would you describe the style and designs available at Furbish to someone who hadn’t been there before?
JM: Colorful, Southern, Eclectic, Bohemian, Modern, Traditional. It’s really the juxtaposition of different looks being placed together in the right way.
NS: What are some of your favorite design trends for spring? What are some of your favorite pieces available at Furbish right now?
JM: I love mint and olive greens together right now. We are also loving furry things here at Furbish- we have designed a great furry tri-legged stool that’s selling well on the website!
NS: Who are some of your own design inspirations? How would you describe your own personal style?
JM: Dorothy Draper, Miles Redd, Jeffrey Bilhuber are all great. Bloggers are always such a big influence because of the instant transmission of inspirational images, ideas, etc. My style is really a mix of everything I traditionally love and whatever I am absorbing in the moment. Getting a great card from someone or going to a chic restaurant can all inspire me to the next piece of furniture I want to create. For instance, I love the shape of a camel back sofa, and then maybe I see a great neon dress from TIBI, so a camel back with neon pink trim is born.
NS: What is it like to have the store in Raleigh? Did you always know you’d open the store there?
JM: Raleigh is really growing more and more everyday. I’ve lived here since college, so it is a place that I know really well. I know what people have seen as well as what they haven’t. The style here is very traditional, but people are looking for fun things in blogs or magazines that they want to incorporate into their home, and that’s where we come in!
NS: What’s your favorite piece you’ve ever purchased from your store?
JM: I have the Harry Allen Golden Pig Bank. He sits on my desk at home proudly!
NS: What are some easy and simple ways (in your opinion) to freshen the decor and design of a space or interior?
JM: Pillows and throws are one of the easiest ways to change the feel of a room. Also, you can never have too many coffee table books. They can make a room (and you!) look more interesting if your space is feeling kind of dull.
