“Always mindful of our good fortune of travel and the appreciation our surroundings inspire our process of creating vibrant print and form.” – Rozae Nichols

Over Easter weekend, I took a peek inside one of my favorite Austin boutiques, By George, to check out the array of beautiful pieces they’d acquired for spring.  I stopped in my tracks when I came across an INCREDIBLE jacket from Clover Canyon.  I immediately began lusting over the entire line! Clover Canyon is a new “California girl cool” collection founded in 2011 by fashion designer Rozae Nichols Clover Canyon is an eclectic array of art and nature inspired graphic prints, intense color play, and landscape. The silhouettes are relaxed, simple, and flattering.  And, the graphic prints are all hand cut -making each piece even more special, eye-catching, and well-designed.

It was a wonderful opportunity to catch up with the line’s LA based designer, Rozae Nichols, and learn more about collection and what’s in store for fall!

The Grand Canyon was a strong inspiration behind Clover Canyon’s spring 2012 collection – photo

N/S: When did you first get the idea for the Clover Canyon line?

Rozae: We have a long history of creating special prints in our design studio as textiles have always been the starting point for our creative process. After years of success from our Rozae printed collections, we decided to create a new collection, devoted entirely to the concept of our uniquely engineered printing and creative process. Clover Canyon was born from our ability to create & produce from a local, streamlined artistic and highly skilled technique process.

N/S: What was the direct inspiration behind the spring 2012 collection?

Rozae: Clover Canyon’s Spring 2012 season is inspired by the colored landscape of the Grand Canyon and the lush florals of the South Pacific.

seriously, isn’t this beautiful?? so unique! Love the nautical stripes paired with palm.

“Stripe is our happy homage to just some of the amazing intelligence found in nature.” -  Rozae Nichols.

gorgeous sheen- just like a mermaid! :) from Clover Canyon

tropical – stunning!

N/S: What makes this label different than others you’ve designed before?

Rozae: For many years, we have created multiple collections each focused on different techniques. The Rozae Nichols collections have always been much textured collections comprised of many techniques including extensive detailed hand work, innovative printing and sharp tailoring.

N/S: All of your prints are so eclectic and imaginative.  Where do you find inspiration for the prints and different graphics you have used?  Was there any particular inspiration for the spring/summer collection?

Rozae: Clover Canyon Spring 2012 is a Collective visual narrative of our memories from the American South West Grand Canyons to the Pacific Tropics. Here we translate some of our favorite places and textures resonant of some of our travel experience.

A surreal colored Grand Canyon landscape framed by our signature classic foulard and the Trompe l’oeil Granite Stone split by an eerie highway yellow stripe, together, reflect the memory of one American desert road trip.
Explosive minerals, rock and cork, composed as graphic borders of lush, abstracted florals, Birds of Paradise and oversized flowers are visual reflections of fragrant memories of the South Pacific island of Fiji. And the Parrot Stripe is our happy homage to just some of the amazing intelligence found in nature.

This season, we are excited to introduce our printed body forming Neoprene fabric adding a streamlined structure to the collection’s softer, more fluid silhouettes.

Always mindful of our good fortune of travel and the appreciation our surroundings inspire our process of creating vibrant print and form.

N/S: Are all pieces from Clover Canyon made in California? What is the “collaborative effort” and process of its creation like?

Rozae: This has always been the heart and soul of what we do. We strongly believe in local community, and the integrity of our long relationships and the beautiful results from this collaborative spirit.

N/S: Where are some of your favorite places to travel and how do they influence you?

Rozae: My most favored place is a slice of land in New Mexico, named, The Lightning Field. Artist Walter De Maria created this Land Art site which to me is the perfect convergence of art and nature. It is a beautifully sublime, mathematically pure, spiritual, experience.

Clover Canyon by Rozae Nichols fall 2012

N/S: What colors, styles, creations, and prints might we expect to see from Clover Canyon this fall?

Rozae: Fall 2012 has been created with the our frequently visited cross cultural elements, such as: Spanish Rococo, South American landscapes,  super sized florals, Icelandic Green valleys and life size portraits of horses. We introduced fluid Printed Velvet and continued with our signature eclectic printed sequin styles. The silhouettes are a mix of fluid, draped forms, ease of cool Jersey styles and some new structured, tailored printed skinny pants and sharp jackets. It all layers beautifully together and of course, look stunning when paired with sleek, monochromatic styles such as our richly colored leather leggings and short skirts.
