The Supper Club LA – Susan Foster02.15.2012

Susan Foster and Tamsin Lonsdale

I love keeping up with the chic events and soirees from The Supper Club. Currently, the stylish group offers membership to chapters in LA, London, and New York.  I am certainly keeping my fingers crossed for a Dallas chapter! The Supper Club Founder, Tamsin Lonsdale and Susan Foster recently hosted a romantic soiree at Susan’s recently expanded Brentwood fine jewelry store on behalf of Valentine’s Day for The Supper Club LA.  Guests including Adam DeVillo, Jonas Bell Pasht, Matthew Grant, Evan Hainey, Bird York, Elizabeth Chait, Tatiana Kelly, Tava Smiley, Theresa Ava Alexandria, Tayfun King, and Nicole A. Watson, enjoyed an intimate and glamorous evening of exquisite cuisine, desserts, cocktails, music, fine jewelry, and equally elegant company.  Upon arriving at Susan’s jewelry store, guests sipped fresh peach bellinis.  They enjoyed a dinner prepared by a private chef and her team which included: Fingerling Potato with Creme Fraiche and Caviar, Asparagus Custard with Fried Parmesan, Beet Reduction, Morel Mushroom and Fennel Pollen and Hanger Steak with Baby Potatoes, and Demi Glace.  The cocktails of the evening were: Get Lucky, Haven’t We Met Before, and Strawberry Crush – all made with the smooth Prairie Organic Vodka.

And, as for dessert?  Along with a savory sweetened mint tea, guests enjoyed their choice of coconut macaroons, mini olive oil cakes, passion fruit mousse lemon meringue tartlettes, and rainbow macaroons.  With excellent food paired with divine company and cocktails (in the ambiance of Susan’s magnificent store), it was certainly an evening to remember.  A celebrity haven, the decor of Susan Foster’s boutique is a mix of mid-century modern and refined luxury.  Her twelve-year old namesake jewelry line has been showcased at global retailers like Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Harrods – so having the opportunity to peruse the collection throughout the evening was certainly a treat for guests. It was an absolutely delightful evening to celebrate the holiday of all that’s pink and red and equally sweet!

Holly Hardison and Ben Price02.14.2012

Front Doors to the Hardison home

I had the pleasure of attending the most adorable party this past Saturday to celebrate the engagement of my good friend, Holly Hardison and Ben Price!  Just day’s before Valentine’s Day, it was of course a pink and red themed fete filled with close friends and family. Even Holly’s darling terrier, Crosby, was running around in a black silk bow tie throughout the evening.  Guests were greeted by striking arrangements of H & B flowers on the front doors and a jazz pianist playing in the formal living room.  The evening was romantic and simply lovely. Caterers served fresh sliders right off a grill in the dining room, chicken kabobs, frites, sauteed vegetables, and more.  My personal favorite?  The cupcakes and coffee bar!   The cocktail party even hosted its own signature drinks including: the XOXO and the Heart Throb. I hope you enjoy these snapshots as much as I have – the perfect Valentine’s Day inspiration!

Congratulations to Holly & Ben for such a beautiful evening celebrating two wonderful people!

Alexis Traina – Swanson Vineyards02.03.2012

Alexis Swanson Traina

“Napa Valley is so abundant with richness, texture, vibrancy, and coolness,” said Alexis.

For Alexis Swanson Traina, Creative Director of Swanson Vineyards in Napa, successfully working with her father for almost 20 years is an opportunity and an experience for which she is grateful and proud of accomplishing. “I started working for Swanson Vineyards right out of college,” she said, “I had zero formal wine/Oenology training, but felt like I understood the psychology of the consumer.”  And, after having the opportunity to visit Swanson Vineyards this past fall to test the Swirl it! app with my fabulous friend and tour guide, Brittany Hawkins, it was clear that we were surrounded by creativity and incentives to increase the approachability of wine in fun, new,  and exciting ways (the same motives of Swirl it!).  The grounds are breathtaking, with rose gardens and views of the sun that certainly provide a serene and even ethereal escape from reality. “My home is wherever my husband and children are,” said Alexis, “I am super grateful to be able to live between both San Francisco and Napa — it’s a 70 minute journey to an entire different world.”

The Sip Shoppe at Swanson Vineyards

The Sip Shoppe at Swanson Vineyards offers a wine club

As Creative Director of Swanson Vineyards, what makes her family’s own vineyard unique?  How does it stand apart from others?  “We have an authentic point of view and through our wines focus on one concept:  glorifying the everyday through the ceremonies and rituals of wine,” she said, “Education is the backbone of what we do, illuminating the endless pleasures and delights of wine.”  In fact, for Alexis, a purpose is the very core of what personally signifies great design.  “In branding: the use of color, type and original point of view,” she said.

Swanson Vineyards learned early on that guests to their property searched for and enjoyed having tasting options during their visits. “Some prefer a formal and comprehensive tasting experience with their favorite wines, rooted in education,” said Alexis, “While others prefer to taste informally and specifically.” Because of this, Alexis noted the vineyard offers two different tasting experiences: the highly coveted Salon tasting – an intimate tasting experience limited to 8 guests exploring Swanson’s most celebrated wines and the Sip Shoppe – a candy store for adults standing as a decadent wine emporium reinventing the rituals of fine wine, reviving the night cap, and offering some of the family’s favorite wines along with clever and clandestine delights and gifts.

The Salon

The Salon- an intimate tasting experience limited to 8 guests exploring Swanson’s most celebrated wines

In fact, as for her own favorite experience at Swanson Vineyards, Alexis notes the Salon tasting to be at the top of her list.  “Yes, I always suggest the Salon tasting, as it is such a memorable experience,” she said.  For her, the most treasured aspect of working at Swanson Vineyards is the experiences she creates and is able share with her family on a daily basis.  In fact, she notes the sources of her personal inspiration to be her husband, Trevor Traina, and her parents and sisters.  “My business life and personal life intersect all day long– and entertaining is always a part of it,” said Alexis.  And, what are some of the wines she enjoys and brings to parties? “On a weeknight, its Swanson ’08 Merlot or 2010 Rose,” she said, “And, for a party, its always Modern House Wines.”

The Modern House Wines are extremely well done.  Not only are they a blast to taste in the Sip Shoppe, but the labels are eye-catching, quirky, unique, and certainly couldn’t be more perfect as your next host or hostess gift for your next soiree.  How did they come to be?  “The Modern House Wines have been a super interesting experiment that we stumbled upon and are eager to grow,” said Alexis, “The labels themselves were inspired by the subjects of my emails: With Love, Please Forgive Me, Thrilled For You, Lucky Night, Mazel Tov.  From there we started the JUST MARRIED wedding line. These wines instantly found a niche as your HOUSE WINE/ PARTY WINE/ GIFT WINE, and took off.”  I’d say they’ve definitely taken off- they were recently listed in O magazine in Oprah’s “O List!”

Alexis and her children – from Alexis’ Napa – her personal blog

on Alexis’ Napa!

“In February, we are launching a new section providing 24-hour Napa itineraries for:  the bon vivant, the foodie, the high roller, the oenophile, the bohemian,” said Alexis, “Each itinerary offers a curated snapshot of Napa.  They’re a lot of fun and we are very excited!”

And, aside from the Modern House Wines, working full time as a mother, wife, and the Creative Director at the vineyards, Alexis operates her own blog – Alexis’ Napa “for the curious and eccentric.” The blog is bright, quirky, and full of amazing information on the area and lifestyle tips.  Aside from asking how in the world she has time to update it so frequently, what gave her the incentive to start a blog with such a busy schedule?  Did she feel there was a void somewhere?  “I wanted to represent one of many points of views about WHAT IS NAPA VALLEY…. I felt so strongly that Napa deserved to be represented in a modern/ intriguing way, that it was not,” said Alexis, “Napa Valley is so abundant with richness, texture, vibrancy, and coolness.  The blog itself seems to evolve daily exploring the many ceremonies and rituals of good living with wine.”

And, her most exciting news yet?  What’s to come from Swanson Vineyards and Alexis’ blog!  “In February, we are launching a new section providing 24-hour Napa itineraries for:  the bon vivant, the foodie, the high roller, the oenophile, the bohemian,” she said,  “Each itinerary offers a curated snapshot of Napa.  They’re a lot of fun and we are very excited!”  With her experience, great taste, and exquisite eye for design, I can’t wait to read Alexis’ itineraries and visit Napa from her perspective – through the eyes of a bohemian, a foodie, etc. I think it certainly provides yet another excuse to visit Napa this year- with a visit to Swanson Vineyards on the top of my list!

The Salem-Ceder Wedding01.30.2012

“I was never the girl that had been dreaming up her wedding since I was 5 years old,” said the recently married Annie Ceder, “I never even allowed myself to flip through bridal magazines until I was actually engaged!  That said, I had an idea about the overall style I wanted the wedding to have.  I wanted it to feel a little fancy and glamorous.”  Annie married Carl Ceder this past November in Dallas, Texas at Holy Trinity Catholic Church and hosted a reception at The Crescent. She is co-founder of the blog, The NOW Stylebook blog with her best friend Elizabeth Midgett and after keeping up with her Wedding Wednesday posts all last year- I absolutely had to do a follow-up post on this gorgeous event!

So, without any exact notion of how she wanted her wedding to look like, how did she begin to plan her own once engaged?  Where did she find inspiration? “It was never really a wedding inspiration for me,” she said, “I based my planning on a Vanity Fair magazine cover, where they have all of the actresses together and they are on set.  It just really caught my eye. They were wearing these gorgeous pastel dresses and they were glitzy and so glamorous.”  The magazine gave her an idea to mix pastel colors with black.  Additionally, she found inspiration in the Chanel Spring 2011 Paris Fashion Show. “The girls are in black, white, pastel colors, with a lot of pink,” said Annie.

Annie’s Wedding Invitation – more on her calligraphy craze here… !

Annie and Carl were engaged last February.  After Annie’s parents interviewed about 4 wedding planners and after choosing Holly Tripp of Holly Tripp Event Design, they began the wedding planning.  “We had a 9 month engagement, which I feel was about the right amount of time to plan a wedding,” said Annie.  And, what was it like to work with Holly?  “She was great, she was wonderful,” she said, “My dad picked her because he sensed that they would work really well together (and they did!).  And the moment I met Holly I absolutely adored her!”  How about Carl?  Did he help with the planning?  “At first I dreamed that Carl would come to every appointment with me,” she said, “The first appointment I took him to, was a 3 hour meeting with a potential floral vendor. I felt so bad for him! What was I thinking for having him come look at design related appointments?  So, from then on, he attended the cake and catering tasting meetings- which he enjoyed!”   As for wedding related blogs and websites, beyond her Vanity Fair magazine spread and the Chanel Spring 2011 Paris Fashion Show, Annie felt there is a lack of resources on the website for her particular type of dream wedding.  “There’s Style Me Pretty, 100 Layer Cake, and blogs that offer inspiration for more rustic type weddings- which I love- but it wasn’t the look I was going for,” she said, “There really is a lack of websites that focus on more ballroom types of weddings.”

Throughout the process, Annie adhered to her budget, and found creative ways to be sure she was still getting what she wanted without going overboard when it came to pricing.  For instance, when she found her dream Save the Date on a letterpress website that was completely out of her budget, she used it as inspiration and found a studio that could recreate the same look in her price range.  “We ended up using Park Life Press in North Carolina,” she said, “They were great!  And, my dad hired the fabulous calligrapher Debi Sementelli in Dallas.  She worked on the calligraphy and sent the artwork to Park Life Press. They created a plate and made the Save the Date!” As for the wedding invitations, they found them at Paper Source in the mall.  “They were Crane,” Annie said, “And, they were having a sale.  They were classic, traditional, glamorous- just perfect. Debi did all of the calligraphy for the envelopes.”

Elizabeth and Annie – bloggers behind The NOW Stylebook

Something old? “A lace handkerchief Carl’s mom gave me before the wedding- it was his great-grandmother’s.”

Something new? “My dress!”

Something borrowed? Something blue?  “A sapphire ring that I borrowed from my best friend Kaylan.  Her husband gave it to her the day her son was born and her son is my godson- very special to me.”

As for the bridesmaid dresses, Annie noted this might have been the most difficult aspect of the wedding on which she had to make a decision. “Oh my gosh, this was the one thing I agonized over,” she said, “Remember the Vanity Fair cover I mentioned? Well, I had this vision that my bridesmaids would wear different colored dresses, similar to this photoshoot.   I researched and shopped around finding different bridesmaids dress (and even regular dress) designers that could help evoke this ethereal feeling that this magazine spread has.  My best friends and I went to Stanley Korshak and loved the Amsale dresses in chiffon – they are light, airy and come in a variety of styles.  So then I had each girl pick a color – black, dark grey, light grey, pale pink, pale blue… and they could pick it in their own style.  I agonized over whether or not this would look random.  I even did a blog post asking for feedback.”

Annie just couldn’t decide what each one of her bridesmaids wearing a different color and style of dress would look like all together.  “At the end of the day, I decided it wouldn’t look cohesive and would just look a little off,” she said,  “After all, the dresses in the Vanity Fair spread are by Elie Saab and other amazing designers.  Not trying to knock Amsale, but the look wasn’t quite the same. That said, I opted for all black, and the girls could pick out any style as long as the fabric was chiffon.  I made the right decision!”  She’s right, the classic look of her bridesmaids in the beautiful black Amsale chiffon gowns of their own style choosing was classy, elegant, timeless- yet, still very glamorous!

The Salem-Ceder Wedding Party

When it came to her wedding dress, Annie noted it to be one of the most effortless decisions throughout the wedding planning process.  “I thought this would be the hardest step of the process, but it was actually the easiest part, ” she said, “We went to Warren Barrón Bridal in Highland Park Village,” she said, “It was the first place we went. I had my mom, my dad there, and my three best friends – Katie, Elizabeth, and Kaylan (you have the store to yourself).  I tried on 4 dresses and this was one of them.”  She absolutely loved it.  “I tried it on and my dad and I started dancing in the store by the window,” she said, “People were walking by the store and they were cheering- they could see us dancing through the window.”  She also purchased the Vera Wang black crystal sash at Warren Barrón that she wore to her reception.

“I actually purchased my veil at David’s Bridal,” she said, “During the ceremony, it was the long cathedral length and Holly cut it to a shorter length before the reception.”  As for shoes, she wore two pairs.  “I wore my dream shoes,” she said, “Pale pink satin Valentino pumps with a gold mesh bow with pearls in them- so pretty – during the ceremony.  As for the reception, I needed shoes that would match my black sash that I changed into.  I wore Jimmy Choo heels I purchased at Nordstrom Rack for $200.  They have black Art Deco-esque stones on the top and matched the sash perfectly.  They were the shoes I brought to Warren Barrón when I went to try on the dresses.

At the ceremony, Annie was excited to share the Texas Boys Choir sang throughout the mass at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.  The reception was held at The Crescent. Was it difficult to decide upon a dinner menu?  “Surf and turf wasn’t really in our budget,” she said, “So we decided on a menu with a Texas twist.”  All catering was in-house at The Crescent – they baked her wedding cake as well. “My favorite cake is Pillsbury Funfetti – so the inside of the cake was actually just that,” she said, “The outside is a flower cascading down the side, the layers were frosted inside- iced pink, and the outside was fondant.”   As for the band?  “My parents drove to see bands perform,” she said, “We decided on Cuvee.  They were great!  And, then when the band stopped, we had DJ Brian Prescott fill in – it really helped because people couldn’t tell when the band took a break!”

Her absolute favorite part of the wedding was walking down the aisle.  “Some people dread it,” she said, “But it’s so special to see all of your friends, family, your best friends on the alter- I saw Carl standing there.  And, walking with my dad was super special.  My other favorite part, was being on the dance floor with Carl and just everyone and using my veil as a prop all night!  I was dancing under it with friends and flinging it around.  I also played the cowbell on stage with my friends!”  The most challenging aspect was seeing everything come together as she’d hoped.  “It was trusting my vision was going to come to life in the ballroom,” she said, “But, a lot of the elements that I used in my wedding planning weren’t exactly wedding elements!   I was trying to make my wedding look like this inspiration board that wasn’t necessarily a wedding board.  It was putting trust in my amazing vendors that everything would come to life and eventually it did!”

As for advice for future brides, what would she tell them?  “Well, Carl and I practiced dancing a few times before the wedding, but when I was trying to dance in my wedding dress- it was a disaster,” she said, “I don’t think the train of my dress was bustled properly, so I was tripping over it the whole time.  It’s comical now, I was falling all over the place in that dress.  So, make sure you know how to do the bustle really well and pay attention to the fact that you are going to have a huge train and not on the same clothes as when you are practicing!”  She also said it helps to stay really organized throughout the process.  “Find one point person, who is going to handle everything,” she said.

Her wedding reception was decorated by lovely bouquets and vases of flowers throughout the space.  How did she decide on these?  “I always knew I wanted to carry white peonies,” she said, “As for the bridesmaids, I agonized at first and almost chose an all-white wedding.  But, with inspiration from the Chanel fashion show again, I decided doing shades of pink with a trusted florist who was great, Stacey at The Wildflower.   Her personality was just great to work with!” And, where did Annie and Carl spend their honeymoon?  “An all-inclusive resort,” she said, “The Secrets Maroma Beach in Mexico and Four Nights at the Banyan Tree in Mayakoba.“  Was it perfect?  “So fabulous! It was the Riviera Maya in Mexico so our friends and families were worried we were going to be killed by drug cartels, but we’re still alive,” she laughed.

Thank you to Annie and The NOW Stylebook for sharing these lovely photos and an even more fantastic story with Nonsense & Sensibility!

Olmo Dining Chairs01.07.2012

Olmo Dining Chair – Lilac – from Anthropologie

Maybe it’s because I’m listening to classical music and drinking French Roast coffee this morning, but I am in love with these antique and worn looking Olmo Chairs from Anthropologie at the moment.  They make me want to be rid of my Kartel Ghost Chairs and adorn my vintage Baker dining table with these colorful little numbers. These one-of-a-kind curved-back 1900s chairs are designed by Serbian artist Draga Obradorvic at her studio in Como, Italy.  Obradorvic reupholsters vintage frames in colorful cotton canvas fabrics.  Some of the chairs are then printed with favorite, quotes, or sketches.

Aspen Emporium & Flying Circus12.26.2011

The Aspen Emporium and Flying Circus

I stumbled upon The Aspen Emporium and Flying Circus, a new store in Aspen, on my friend’s 30th birthday trip. It’s an adorable cottage filled with natural dyed scarves, handmade pottery, chocolates, flowers, artwork, local grown produce, coffee, and fresh food. It was such an adorable shop and the owners were so friendly!  The shop supports local artists, craftsmen, and farmers – so it was a great spot to find one-of-a-kind gifts and treats while in Aspen.

The day of my visit, there was a guitarist at the store was providing entertainment for the opening party.  As, I was wearing a leopard hat, the guitarist stopped mid-song and started to play Leopard-Skin Pill Box Hat by Bob Dylan.  Though I was immediately blushing – it was a memorable moment and certainly added to the character of the shop! I will definitely be visiting again on my next trip.

House of Hackney11.26.2011

House of Hackney

“This is hardly Queen Victoria’s style.  Think Alice in Wonderland- or Colefax and Fowler on acid.” - Whitney Robinson, Town and Country magazine, December 2011

There are some moments in life when I find myself cringing much more intensely over not having Wi-Fi than others.  One of these moments, was on a recent plane trip as I was perusing the new December issue of Town and Country magazine. The article, “All the Trimmings” by Whitney Robinson on the House of Hackney caught my attention and I glanced back at the photos throughout the trip.  On top of a beautiful photo spread, the couple behind the brand, Freida Gormley and Javvy M. Royle have a wonderful story and certainly a great eye.  And, it seems from The New York Times T Magazine, to Vogue Italia, to Town and Country magazine, this couple is not going unnoticed.  This past July, T Magazine wrote, “The couple, who decided there was a gap in the market for luxury British interiors with a fashion slant, started their company, House of Hackney, in April, with a maximalist bang.”

Their eight-month-old interiors company and showroom is housed in the couple’s three-story house built in the 1850s in Hackney, the North London borough. Many of the walls are covered in a wallpaper of whimsical creatures- each seeming to tell a story of their own. The couple called the animal print Hackney Empire.  “It’s full of these colorful characters, a lot like Hackney itself,” Gormley told Town and Country.  The couple’s design line offers furniture, wallpaper, fabrics, china, cushions, curtains, and lampshades.  This line certain adds a bit of character and flair to the traditional English Rose.

Martin Showroom Napa11.23.2011

Martin Showroom – St. Helena, CA

I had so much fun on a recent trip to Napa Valley (for the first time) to visit my friend Brittany Hawkins.  We went all around Napa Valley testing out her new Swirl It! app, which I wrote about several months ago. I am definitely going to write about this trip in a few separate parts because there is not a chance I will be able to choose which images to share otherwise.  With this trip, it’s impossible to be a successful editor!

One of my favorite stops, was the Martin Showroom in downtown St. Helena.  The showroom of Erin Martin Design is filled with an amazing amount of extraordinary objects.  According to the Martin Showroom, they are a “balance of art, engineering aesthetics, and personality.”  Within the showroom, you find one-of-a-kind objects designed to bring life and experience into any space.

Each object in the Martin Showroom takes you on a personal journey and each certainly has its own story to tell.   It truly is a must-visit in Napa!  Be sure to visit their website in the meantime, it’s just as interesting and creative and shows some of the Erin Martin Design interior projects as well!
