La Duni Love – Dallas02.13.2012

It’s been a pleasure to contribute to Amy Ephron‘s informative One For the Table website. My most recent post was on La Duni restaurants in Dallas. They are absolutely the perfect spot for a romantic Valentine’s Day – even if it’s just for dessert!  And, of course, their coffee menu is beyond!  I thought I’d share some of the photographs I snapped at the NorthPark location before submitting the article.  Read my La Duni post on OneFortheTable here. And, for those of you who live far far away from Dallas, please put this on your “must visit” list when you make a trip here!

Alexis Traina – Swanson Vineyards02.03.2012

Alexis Swanson Traina

“Napa Valley is so abundant with richness, texture, vibrancy, and coolness,” said Alexis.

For Alexis Swanson Traina, Creative Director of Swanson Vineyards in Napa, successfully working with her father for almost 20 years is an opportunity and an experience for which she is grateful and proud of accomplishing. “I started working for Swanson Vineyards right out of college,” she said, “I had zero formal wine/Oenology training, but felt like I understood the psychology of the consumer.”  And, after having the opportunity to visit Swanson Vineyards this past fall to test the Swirl it! app with my fabulous friend and tour guide, Brittany Hawkins, it was clear that we were surrounded by creativity and incentives to increase the approachability of wine in fun, new,  and exciting ways (the same motives of Swirl it!).  The grounds are breathtaking, with rose gardens and views of the sun that certainly provide a serene and even ethereal escape from reality. “My home is wherever my husband and children are,” said Alexis, “I am super grateful to be able to live between both San Francisco and Napa — it’s a 70 minute journey to an entire different world.”

The Sip Shoppe at Swanson Vineyards

The Sip Shoppe at Swanson Vineyards offers a wine club

As Creative Director of Swanson Vineyards, what makes her family’s own vineyard unique?  How does it stand apart from others?  “We have an authentic point of view and through our wines focus on one concept:  glorifying the everyday through the ceremonies and rituals of wine,” she said, “Education is the backbone of what we do, illuminating the endless pleasures and delights of wine.”  In fact, for Alexis, a purpose is the very core of what personally signifies great design.  “In branding: the use of color, type and original point of view,” she said.

Swanson Vineyards learned early on that guests to their property searched for and enjoyed having tasting options during their visits. “Some prefer a formal and comprehensive tasting experience with their favorite wines, rooted in education,” said Alexis, “While others prefer to taste informally and specifically.” Because of this, Alexis noted the vineyard offers two different tasting experiences: the highly coveted Salon tasting – an intimate tasting experience limited to 8 guests exploring Swanson’s most celebrated wines and the Sip Shoppe – a candy store for adults standing as a decadent wine emporium reinventing the rituals of fine wine, reviving the night cap, and offering some of the family’s favorite wines along with clever and clandestine delights and gifts.

The Salon

The Salon- an intimate tasting experience limited to 8 guests exploring Swanson’s most celebrated wines

In fact, as for her own favorite experience at Swanson Vineyards, Alexis notes the Salon tasting to be at the top of her list.  “Yes, I always suggest the Salon tasting, as it is such a memorable experience,” she said.  For her, the most treasured aspect of working at Swanson Vineyards is the experiences she creates and is able share with her family on a daily basis.  In fact, she notes the sources of her personal inspiration to be her husband, Trevor Traina, and her parents and sisters.  “My business life and personal life intersect all day long– and entertaining is always a part of it,” said Alexis.  And, what are some of the wines she enjoys and brings to parties? “On a weeknight, its Swanson ’08 Merlot or 2010 Rose,” she said, “And, for a party, its always Modern House Wines.”

The Modern House Wines are extremely well done.  Not only are they a blast to taste in the Sip Shoppe, but the labels are eye-catching, quirky, unique, and certainly couldn’t be more perfect as your next host or hostess gift for your next soiree.  How did they come to be?  “The Modern House Wines have been a super interesting experiment that we stumbled upon and are eager to grow,” said Alexis, “The labels themselves were inspired by the subjects of my emails: With Love, Please Forgive Me, Thrilled For You, Lucky Night, Mazel Tov.  From there we started the JUST MARRIED wedding line. These wines instantly found a niche as your HOUSE WINE/ PARTY WINE/ GIFT WINE, and took off.”  I’d say they’ve definitely taken off- they were recently listed in O magazine in Oprah’s “O List!”

Alexis and her children – from Alexis’ Napa – her personal blog

on Alexis’ Napa!

“In February, we are launching a new section providing 24-hour Napa itineraries for:  the bon vivant, the foodie, the high roller, the oenophile, the bohemian,” said Alexis, “Each itinerary offers a curated snapshot of Napa.  They’re a lot of fun and we are very excited!”

And, aside from the Modern House Wines, working full time as a mother, wife, and the Creative Director at the vineyards, Alexis operates her own blog – Alexis’ Napa “for the curious and eccentric.” The blog is bright, quirky, and full of amazing information on the area and lifestyle tips.  Aside from asking how in the world she has time to update it so frequently, what gave her the incentive to start a blog with such a busy schedule?  Did she feel there was a void somewhere?  “I wanted to represent one of many points of views about WHAT IS NAPA VALLEY…. I felt so strongly that Napa deserved to be represented in a modern/ intriguing way, that it was not,” said Alexis, “Napa Valley is so abundant with richness, texture, vibrancy, and coolness.  The blog itself seems to evolve daily exploring the many ceremonies and rituals of good living with wine.”

And, her most exciting news yet?  What’s to come from Swanson Vineyards and Alexis’ blog!  “In February, we are launching a new section providing 24-hour Napa itineraries for:  the bon vivant, the foodie, the high roller, the oenophile, the bohemian,” she said,  “Each itinerary offers a curated snapshot of Napa.  They’re a lot of fun and we are very excited!”  With her experience, great taste, and exquisite eye for design, I can’t wait to read Alexis’ itineraries and visit Napa from her perspective – through the eyes of a bohemian, a foodie, etc. I think it certainly provides yet another excuse to visit Napa this year- with a visit to Swanson Vineyards on the top of my list!

Valentine’s Day: Chef Connie Bakes01.27.2012

When you stumble upon a private chef who bakes intricately designed chocolate boxes in the finest quality ingredients- you know it’s an excellent day.  Chef Connie Mullins knew she was destined be a chef at a very young age.  She started to bake when she was just 5 years old and decorated her first cake at the age of 10. At 12 years old, she began to play around with food and since then, she’s worked in an array of roles within the culinary industry.  “I had an aunt that sewed for Victor Costa,” said Connie, “She really inspired me.  She was a cake artist and baked beautiful wedding cakes- any type of dessert really.”  Her aunt passed down a book to her from the School of Wilton and that’s how Connie learned to decorate cakes.  She decorated them all through high school and sold them on the side.

And, how did Chef Connie Bakes come to be?  After cooking on her own for so long, Connie enrolled in professional classes at El Centro college in the food and hospitality program.  “At that time, there wasn’t a bakery pastry program,” she said, “But, while I was there, one was approved and I went back through the baking and pastry program as well.”  In fact, it was through this program, that Connie was able to choose her favorite dish she’s ever made. “It was vanilla puddin’ and I started making it in 1973 for my brother,” she said, “When I did enter culinary school and was admitted into the pastry program, it was one of the recipes the chef went over that all pastry chef’s must learn how to master: pastry cream (because it’s used throughout the bake shop).  And, it’s funny because what I had always called my vanilla pudding had been pastry cream all along- and I’d been making it since I was 12 years old just by feel and sight!”

Chef Connie’s own favorite food is German Chocolate Cake.  “It’s the cake I grew up on, the cake my mom made for every holiday, special occasion, and I’ve kind of created my own version of it- changed it a little bit.  That’s one of the things I’m known for: the German Chocolate Cake.”  As for the Valentine’s Day holiday, she loves her Chocolate Heart Boxes – and for good reason- they are unique, one-of-a-kind, and eye-catching. “It’s something that I’ve been doing since the 90s,” she said, “They are great because you can enjoy the chocolate and keep the box for remembrance!”  The Valentine’s Day box can also be inscribed and filled with jewelry or chocolate covered strawberries- it really is the perfect gift.  Connie credits Chef Bill Hunter (whom she trained under) with administering much of her knowledge of the chocolate work and the chocolate tiles that decorate the box.

But, chocolate aside, this Dallas based chef credits the very best attribute of her business to be the moments spent working with her clients and catering to their needs. “I stay true to my profession,” she said, “I don’t take shortcuts or make substitutions for quality and the quality ingredients.  I use the finest ingredients, real chocolate, real butter, eggs, fruit – I don’t use imitations.  I stay true to that and it can be tough to do so in the pastry world, but that was something that I was taught.  You never cross that line and you stay true to it.  To me, insuring quality to my clients is everything.”  Connie is involved in several charity organizations in the Dallas community.  She lists her work with Elizabeth Home, Susan G. Komen, and the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas as all causes dear to her.  In fact, at the Ronald McDonald House, she’s just formed a group with other chefs who go together as a team to cook meals. “Over the holidays, we did gingerbread houses,” she said, “We made 28 gingerbread houses for all of the families there.  After dinner, they’d decorate the houses and loved it.  It helps them get their mind off some of the things they are going through – they seem find happiness in the moment.”

Cupcakes and itty bitty cupcakes

Reese, Connie’s granddaugther, decorating a gumdrop tree.

And, where does she find her inspiration?  How does she keep her creations fresh holiday after holiday?  “Right now, it’s my mini-me, my granddaughter, Reese,” she said, “She’s been baking since she was 2 and is now 6.  Just looking into her eyes I get a lot of ideas! This year, I’ve added itty bitty cupcakes and itty bitty cookies for the special little ones.”   Connie recommends at least a weeks notice to order her special creations- and she does deliver and even travels herself.  “In fact, this summer, I’m off to Aspen in July,” she said.  She notes she often travels with families that hire her to go to their home for a week or weekend as their personal chef throughout their trip.  “I do company dinners, special holidays, and company gift boxes as well,” said Connie, “I always sit down with my clients and customize what’s right for them.  We find out exactly what they need.”

And, that personal attention is what set’s Connie’s creations apart from the rest.  She makes everything from scratch and does not mass-produce her creations- everything is customized, personal, and artisan. From light to dark to white chocolate- Chef Connie Bakes. We are so lucky to have the opportunity to enjoy Connie’s exquisite creations and to celebrate their exquisite craft and painstaking attention to detail. Yes, if there’s one thing that’s for certain, it’s this chef has talent.

Meghan Hochgesang01.11.2012

“It’s that chaotic solitude of being by yourself with your own thoughts, but never alone, that makes me most happy.” – Meghan

Photographer Meghan Hochgesang grew up completely immersed in the arts. “My mom is an interior designer,” she said, “And, my dad always had a camera.”  Now, residing in Jasper, Indiana, Meghan continues to develop her own love for art and design working as a full time graphic designer for the past 7 years. And, lucky for Meghan, her creative outlet seems to be her favorite pastime- photography.  “While I love graphic design, photography is just different for me,” said Meghan, “It comes easily and I love the interaction with my clients.”  And, where does she draw her inspiration?  “Everywhere, magazines, catalogs, blogs,” she said, “My desk is a constant tornado of clippings, receipts, and memory cards.  I get so much inspiration from my clients themselves, though. I mean that’s why I’m hired, right?  To capture a slice of their life?” She describes her ideal client as one who looks at photos that same way.  “They just merely show up and live,” she said.

“I had several people tell me, ‘You know, you should really charge people to do this.’ I’d never for a second thought this could be a possibility for me,” – Meghan

Today, she describes her own relationship with photography as exploratory and explains she’s still trying to find the perfect niche. “I’ve been doing a lot of introspection and asking myself what type of shoots I enjoy most and yield the best results for me as a photographer,” she said, “Not every photographer is great at photographing all types and ages, which is what I’m doing now.  In the past year, I think I’ve learned how to really slow down and take my time with shoots and to notice other things that other people may not.”  She is inspired by a variety of people- those she’s never met and some whom are active in her life on a daily basis.  “People like Diane von Furstenberg, who redefined fashion with a single (simple) dress,” she said, “Photographers like Jasmine Star, who are so selfless with their knowledge (photographers like her are few and far between.)  My family inspires and supports me every day.”

And, what made her decide to pursue a career in the field?  “To be honest, after doing some photos for free for various friends, I had several people tell me, ‘You know, you should really charge people to do this.’ I’d never for a second thought this could be a possibility for me,” she said, “After I shot my first big wedding that year (I’m forever indebted to that couple for trusting me, a photographer with NO wedding experience, to shoot their big day), I was bitten with the photo bug in a big way,” said Meghan.

Meghan’s favorite photograph she’s taken.

“I am absolutely over the moon with this photograph,” said Meghan.

She photographed her favorite place she’s ever shot before she decided to work in the field of photography.  “Really, very easy – Florence, Italy,” she said, “I studied abroad there and SO wish I looked at photography then like I do now. I have tons of photos that are actually great (can you believe I took 2 cameras for that entire trip? A Nikon Coolpix and my manual, black and white Pentax), but they could be SO much better.  A return trip will definitely be happening.”  And, what’s next up on her list of travel destinations? “Top of my list are Thailand, Turkey, Spain, Portland, the mountains of Colorado, and though I’ve been to Palm Springs before, a stay at The Parker is #1 on my bucket list,” she said, “It kind of depends on which opportunity presents itself first.  In reality, my family is planning our sort-of-annual trip to St. John, USVI for this summer.”

Meghan is influenced by photographers including Bobbi + Mike (who inspired her to become a photographer) and Jasmine Star.  “When I found Jasmine Star it was like Pandora’s box of photography knowledge,” she said, “She inspired my business and how I handle everything from lighting to my branding.  And, currently, I have a huge photo-crush on Megan Wynn.” Meghan is most proud of capturing was taken at a wedding this past fall.  “I was experimenting really,” she said, “First dances are really long and you end up with 75 versions of the same image, so I decided to turn off my flash and wing it.  When I started editing this wedding (I knew it was a special one from the get-go), I went straight for this series because I hoped what I captured lived up to my vision and did it ever.  I am absolutely over the moon with this photograph.”

And, where and when does Meghan find herself happiest?  “I should say, ‘When I’m surrounded by my family (around the holidays, for sure) just enjoying each other,’” she said, “That does make me happy, endlessly happy. But, when I look back on past memories, what hangs in my head most is when I still lived in the city (Washington, DC, then Chicago) and I’d get up early and go for long walks, winding down streets, with a tea in my hand, and ended undoubtedly in a museum (DC) or Barneys and Anthropologie (Chicago). It’s that chaotic solitude of being by yourself with your own thoughts, but never alone, that makes me most happy.”

She noted another happy memory to be an international trip from this past summer.  “I traveled to Amsterdam and Brussels with my boyfriend and after, met up with my family (I’m talking aunts, uncles, cousins, grandma) in Germany where we traveled all around the Alpine region and Munich,” she said, “All 3 countries were so different and it was great because my expectations for Germany were very low (I knew I’d love Amsterdam and Brussels) and I ended up loving every single second we were there.  Being surprised is what exploring is all about, right?”

Meghan Hochgesang

And, what type of exploring does Meghan find herself drawn to on the Internet?  What are her favorite websites?  “My daily must-read blogs are Cupcakes and Cashmere, Kendi Everyday, Look Linger Love, Design Sponge, Heart of Light, Veronica Loves Archie, Josh Premuda (because he’s cute), Oh Joy, and Dooce (and this doesn’t count the 40+ photography blogs I follow). As of late, it seems I do most of my shopping at JCrew.com. And Pinterest. Oh, the dark hole that is Pinterest.”

So, after starting her successful photography company and absolutely loving working to build her business, does she have any advice she’d like to share? “Above all else, be yourself,” she said, “When you work to hone in on your style, people will either flock to it, or run. And that’s ok. When you learn to stop trying to please everyone is when your true self will start to shine. Oh and be nice, too. People always remember kindness.”

Meghan Hochgesang Photography is based in the midwest, but Meghan is more than happy to travel for photography shoots!  Contact Meghan here.

New Lenovo laptop – from Vogue!01.03.2012

The Lenovo IdeaPad U300s is so sleek- who wouldn’t want to show it off?  Stash it in your tote bag – it’s .6″ thin!

Just last month, I was delighted to learn that I had won a Lenovo IdeaPad U300s through the VOGUE Influencer Network!  I was above-and-beyond excited to find this sleek metallic orange laptop waiting for me at home.  It’s clean, super stylish, and oh-so-light.  It’s so seemingly weightless that after picking it up, you would never believe it could possibly be a fully functioning laptop- but, it is!  I’ve been using it the past month on my travels and it’s been such a relief to pack it in my carry-on as it doesn’t seem to add any weight at all. In fact, it’s the size of most of my magazines and assuredly thinner than any VOGUE September issue! It’s the type of technological gadget that you don’t feel the need to stash in a drawer when company comes over – it looks chic on a side table.

My new Lenovo IdeaPad U300s in Clementine Orange!

It’s thinner than my side table!

I must say, that I love the pop of orange and it’s not just because Pantone named Tangerine Tango as the color of 2012. The touch of metallic on the one piece aluminum cover is light and tasteful.  The Lenovo IdeaPad U300s is a laptop with fashion sense.

And, since looks can’t be everything, rest assured that this laptop is incredibly fast and offers a long battery life (with up to 30 days of standby time) and a battery that recharges to 50% in 30 minutes. This savvy and energy efficient IdeaPad also has surround sound, amazing graphics, and a rapid boot time – it’s ready when you are.  So, start 2012 on an entirely clean slate and be sure that your laptop is just as stylish as you are.  Customize your Lenovo IdeaPad U300s here!

Aspen Emporium & Flying Circus12.26.2011

The Aspen Emporium and Flying Circus

I stumbled upon The Aspen Emporium and Flying Circus, a new store in Aspen, on my friend’s 30th birthday trip. It’s an adorable cottage filled with natural dyed scarves, handmade pottery, chocolates, flowers, artwork, local grown produce, coffee, and fresh food. It was such an adorable shop and the owners were so friendly!  The shop supports local artists, craftsmen, and farmers – so it was a great spot to find one-of-a-kind gifts and treats while in Aspen.

The day of my visit, there was a guitarist at the store was providing entertainment for the opening party.  As, I was wearing a leopard hat, the guitarist stopped mid-song and started to play Leopard-Skin Pill Box Hat by Bob Dylan.  Though I was immediately blushing – it was a memorable moment and certainly added to the character of the shop! I will definitely be visiting again on my next trip.

They’ve Gone Bookish.12.23.2011

from top left: Blue Nights by Joan Didion, Loose Diamonds by Amy Ephron, The Old Man and Me by Elaine Dundy, Vintage Flashlight Lamp, Patch Candle, Antique Skeleton Key

It’s that time of year…. to reorder my bookshelves!  As I was sorting through the: have reads, to reads, half-reads, and where-did-this-one-come-from the other day, I was thinking about some of my favorite books from 2011 and the titles that I am hoping await me under the Christmas tree this year.  There are odd reasons books often stand out to an individual.  Maybe the book resonates because it was written by your favorite author, maybe (albeit guiltily) you simply liked the cover, or you picked up a title at the most adorable book store – whatever the reason, it’s always nice to have fond memories and feelings attributed to books.  On my “to read” list is Blue Nights by Joan Didion.  A recent “have read and LOVED” was Loose Diamonds by Amy Ephron (simply hilarious).  And, I began to read The Old Man and Me by Elaine Dundy, but haven’t finished yet.  I picked it up at Book Marc in New York City (one of those adorable book stores) – so that was reason enough to feature it.

1. At Home With Town & Country 2. Pictorial Webster’s: A Visual Dictionary of Curiosities

3. Black & White (and a bit in between) - by Celerie Kemble 4. Bals - Assouline 5. The Grand Bazaar – Istanbul

from left: Vintage Books Boxed Set-Cooking, Vintage Boxed Book Set – Fashion

Some of the books that I added to my “wish list” this year, were: Bals by Assouline, Black and White (and a bit in between) by Celerie Kemble, and the Pictorial Webster’s: A Visual Dictionary of Curiosities. I am very excited about the Pictorial Webster’s.  I think it will be such a fun book for a side table in my living room- so interesting!  I absolutely love the book on The Grand Bazaar by Assouline.  Though the price is a bit steep, the images are positively stunning.  After flipping through the book at a store recently, I left dreaming about a trip to Istanbul.  Which shows, though any quality and truly inspirational print publication may qualify for your “splurge” category when it comes to shopping, in the end, it is more than likely cheaper than a last minute plane ticket to Turkey.  The ticket you purchase on a whim- when you decide you absolutely must have the bracelet from the market featured on page 7.

What were your favorite books this year?

Loose Diamonds with Amy Ephron12.05.2011

Loose Diamonds … and other things I’ve lost (and found) along the way by Amy Ephron

book jacket: William Morrow

Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing novelist, screenwriter, and producer – Amy Ephron.  Her work includes the New York Times bestselling novels A Cup of Tea and One Sunday Morning.  Her newest book, Loose Diamonds … and other things I’ve lost (and found) along the way, is a memoir and her first piece of nonfiction. Amy Ephron is exceptionally meticulous when it comes to writing. For her, a first draft doesn’t exist. “I write about one hundred drafts of every page before moving to the next,” she said, “My writing is almost minimalist, very short clean sentences.”  She is sure that each page is exactly the way she wants it before she moves to the next. This type of beautiful, clean, and meaningful language is the very core and spirit of Loose Diamonds.  Each short story is straightforward, touching, and honest.

The idea of the book first came after Amy’s short story, “I Love Saks” was published in Vogue magazine. Amy has been going to Saks since she was very young and much of her life can be chronicled through her relationship with the store. On her first trip to New York City, her mother brought her to Saks for the very first time. Years later, there were times when Amy couldn’t afford to shop there, but found a way to step inside and enjoy the comfort the space brought her– even if it was to just sip a lemonade.  “I flew to New York once to sell a book and needed an advance,” said Amy, “I went into Saks to buy a new cashmere sweater.  I used what I like to call ‘girl logic’ and thought if I looked as if I didn’t need the money, I’d get the book deal. It worked.”  Loose Diamonds includes Amy’s personal experiences and stories from a young age to those that are very recent. She shares personal accounts that provide insight into a variety of aspects of a woman’s life and how to overcome and rebuild from a seemingly insurmountable level of loss.

And, Amy believes every loose diamond in life is simply searching for a setting– for a secure place in that particular point in time. “There are moments of different decades that are not all happy and I wasn’t as good natured about it then as I am now,” she said.  When it comes to the end of a relationship or marriage, she recommends getting new pajamas and keeping your heart open to something new.  “Loose Diamonds is about finding permanence in an often unstable city (like Los Angeles), where marriages, everything seems momentary,” she said, “It’s hoping to find a sense of stability amidst the chaos.” What truly shines in Amy’s new book is her support for women through almost every one of life’s difficult trials. For Amy, even dating the second time around after her first marriage, was oddly similar to dating in her twenties. “I made the very same stupid mistakes,” she said, “But, then you meet someone and it’s the right thing.  And, there you are.”

Amy Ephron

photograph by: Jonathan Becker

From feeling the loss of Amy’s jewelry in a burglary (when it’s the memories behind the pieces that matter) to the recent loss of her entire home in a fire, Amy’s honesty, strength, and manner of placing things in perspective is beyond admirable.  “There has been so much material loss in my life,” she said, “I have to be good-natured about it.”  Right now, the writer seems to have a solid setting with her husband, Alan Rader, and their family.  She is also a contributing writer to The Daily Beast (where she recently covered the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray), The Huffington Post, and is the founder of One for the Table – an educational and inspiring website on “food, politics & love.” Amy was recently interviewed on “The Talk” and you can find an excerpt of Loose Diamonds in T Magazine and on the Saks Fifth Avenue POV blog.

So, what is some of the greatest advice Amy shares after trying to fit in so many different settings on her own? “You have to be able to say next,” she said, “It’s about licking your wounds and getting up again. There aren’t rules- it’s always changing, but as women we need to mentor each other.”
